Scientific advances have left their mark on our evolution throughout the continuous flow of human history, from the invention of the wheel to penicillin. Currently, we are experiencing a historical moment where discoveries are multiplying exponentially, propelling us towards a future that Ray Kurzweil compares to jumping from the cave paintings of Altamira to stepping on the Moon in just one generation. This article highlights eight advances in science and technology that may define the course of our existence as a species.
1. Artificial Intelligence (AI): A Human Paradigm Shift
A quantitative change that has become a major advance in science is AI, which has experienced its emergence in the second decade of the 21st century. With the integration of AI in tools such as ChatGPT and Midjourney, to name just the most notable ones, the era of the Internet in the 1990s has been transcended, allowing its application in everyday life. With its ability to interpret text, images and videos interchangeably, multimodal artificial intelligence presents promising prospects in various fields such as manufacturing, health, agriculture, archaeological energy and environmental protection.
2. Big Data: The Power of Data
The exponential growth of big data has driven the development of artificial intelligence. Citizens and consumers benefit from more effective attention thanks to the use of big data by governments and companies. Notable examples include navigation systems, personalized medicine, smart cities, industry and manufacturing, and e-commerce.
3. Quantum Computing: Exploring the Core of Matter
It has become necessary to look for alternatives that allow increasing computing power due to miniaturization, and it is seen that in the medium term quantum computing will be a solution. Atom Computing’s 2023 announcement of its first computer with more than 1,000 qubits demonstrates a milestone achieved with the adoption of indeterminate states instead of binary bits. Pharmaceutical simulations, artificial intelligence processes, logistics optimization, secure encryption and weather forecasts are where they promise to execute unprecedented tasks.
4. Smart Cities: Cities with a Mind
The progress of the Internet of Things has driven the emergence of smart homes and, more recently, smart cities. In water management in cities like Burgos, its efficiency is demonstrated by using urban data to optimize processes. The development of future applications contemplates the implementation of buses that avoid traffic and allow energy to be managed through Virtual Power Plants, in order to promote sustainability and improve efficiency in urban environments.
5. Nanotechnology: To the Eyes, the Essential is Invisible.
The door to new discoveries has been opened thanks to nanotechnology and its ability to manipulate atoms and molecules at microscopic levels. This has led to the development of extraordinary advances in areas such as medicine through the use of nanorobots, energy with highly productive solar panels, revolutionary textile fabrics, extremely effective purifying filters, hyper-sensitive sensors and a new range of surprising materials including graphene.
6. CRISPR: The Age of Genetic Modification
Awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technique gives the possibility of cloning, modifying or disabling genetic chains at will. Its applications include genetic editing to correct mutations, improve crops, biological research and antiviral therapy.
7. Metamaterials: Transcending the boundaries established by Physics.
Advances in optics, sound engineering, photovoltaics and electromagnetism are being driven by the creation of metamaterials, artificial materials with engineered microscopic structures. These elements exhibit outstanding qualities, such as bending light around objects or changing the course of sound in seemingly irrational ways.
8. Conquest of Outer Space
Despite previously focusing on lunar and Martian space exploration, there is now a push to create human settlements on both the Moon and Mars thanks to private companies entering the field alongside new players such as India and China. SpaceX’s Starship mothership, along with projects like NASA’s Venus Life Finder (VLF) and VIPER to search for water on the Moon, are ambitious undertakings that will help us expand our frontiers in terms of cosmic knowledge.
In this journey towards a future driven by innovation and exploration, scientific and technological advances are just the beginning, perhaps our generation will not be able to see the full potential of what is to come… but I am sure of one thing, we have been at the right time and place to experience the process of change, adapting and moving forward, keeping ourselves in constant movement, which is the key to living.
